Disaster Training Institute of Indian Red Cross Society (
West Bengal) was functional at Kolkata
in the 60’s & ’70s..The instructors over here were volunteers. They had an important role for health issue of the refugees who came to India during 1971
Bangladesh operation.
A camp office was set up at Raj Bhawan during this period.
At present this institute is not functional for several years even the very old
rented building was demolished. This Institute used to impart training on First
Aid, Instructor course. Their method of training was very effective, more with
teaching aids. The periods were during evening s, Sundays & holidays. The
trainer used to develop a personal relation with the trainees which was carried a long
period, even after the training.
The humanitarian works required the zeal of volunteerism which
is required to practice in life. The art of volunteerism was communicated in a
practical way. I have seen one human being to whom I still love from my heart,
I learned the art of volunteerism from one of the instructors of this Institute.
